Enrico Castelnuovo

Enrico Castelnuovo (Rome, 1929 - Turin, 2014) was one of Italy's leading art historians. He taught at the Universities of Lausanne, Turin and the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. He dealt mainly with problems and aspects of medieval art history, without neglecting other areas and periods: portraiture and its social function in Italian history, methods and trends in art history, and the history of industrial design. He has shown particular interest in “frontier” situations, where different artistic cultures met, and has devoted some essays to problems of artistic geography.
